Smart mesh building, residential parametric architecture

Parametric architecture makes it possible to experiment with new architectural forms and create unique spaces. The Smart Mesh Building in Taipei was designed based on a parametric study.

Parametric architecture is an advanced digital design technique that allows for developing organic shapes based on a series of parameters – such as spatial boundaries, volumes or temperature. It uses a specialized tool to work with those parameters to create complex, versatile and organic geometric designs. Thanks to the Rhinoceros software and its Grasshopper plugin, it is possible to control those forms in conjunction with other factors such as, for example, the exposure to sunlight during the day or a building’s variation in temperature.

Parametric study

The triangular shape of the plot allowed for experimenting with new forms of parametric architecture. The result of this adaptive play is a building with a volume made from three arms that twist around a central Z axis. The true singularity of the building is its façade, composed of a double skin formed from rhomboid elements that are adapted, with different-sized openings, depending on the orientation and sun exposure. This parametric structure also offers views over the city of Taipei.

During the design process, integrated optimized parameters were used to generate an energy-efficient tower. Working with parametric tools, it was possible to develop an original and exclusive product. In addition, thanks to its parametric shapes, at night the building shines like a geometric lantern in the middle of the city.
